Annexure-I (Identification)
The Indian Type Culture Collection (ITCC) was established in 1936 with an aim to provide knowledge and to furnish database for living plant associated fungi. It is the oldest fungal genetic resource centre of India. ITCC is an affiliate member of the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC) and is registered with the World Data Centre for Microorganisms (WDCM, registration number 430).
Presently, the main objectives of ITCC are to act as repositories for fungal and bacterial cultures, to provide services viz., supply of authentic fungal and bacterial cultures and identification of fungi and bacteria to technocrats and scientists working in research Institutions, Universities and Industries.

Maintenance
All groups of fungi which include plant pathogens, biocontrol agents, fungi for medical and industrial use and also plant pathogenic bacteria are being maintained at ITCC.
Preservation
All the ITCC cultures are preserved as actively growing cultures on agar slants, under mineral oil and isolates producing spores are being lyophilized (freeze drying). Fungi are preserved in 5% glycerol stock and maintained at -20 °C and bacteria are preserved in 50% glycerol stock and maintained at -80 °C.
Documentation
Catalogue of fungal and bacterial cultures is revised and published at regular intervals.
SERVICES
ITCC offers services such as the supply of authentic fungal and bacterial cultures, as well as the identification of fungi and bacteria, to technocrats and scientists in research institutions, universities, and industries.
Identification of fungal and bacterial cultures
Identification of different groups of fungi (Zygomycetes, Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes) and fungi like organisms (Oomycetes) and plant pathogenic bacteria received from researchers and students of different parts of the country along with the prescribed request form (Annexure I) are done on payment basis. The report is sent after identification.
Supply of fungal cultures
Authentic fungal and bacterial cultures only for research purpose are supplied as active cultures on agar slants and are dispatched along with the report by surface mail after three to four weeks of receiving the request in the prescribed format (Annexure II). A Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) should be signed before taking the cultures.
Note: Please make the payment only after receiving a confirmation email from ITCC regarding the availability of the cultures. Kindly note that once the payment is made, it is non-refundable.
Deposition of cultures
Fungal and bacterial cultures are of Indian origin having some special features (producers of enzymes, toxins, antibiotics) and newly reported taxa (including new genera, new species and new records) will be maintained at ITCC to ensure ex-situ conservation of microbial diversity as public deposit and safe deposit.
Public Deposits
The valuable fungal cultures can be deposited with the ITCC by the research supervisors/scientists. The cultures will be preserved in the best possible ways. The cultures will appear in the catalogues and are available to everyone without the approval of the depositor. The depositors are required to submit the accession proforma (Annexure III) for each strain by giving relevant details. The depositors may request for supply of cultures on agar slants which is free of cost for only once. ITCC can accept the cultures for general deposit that confirm to the following:
1. The cultures to be deposited are of interest to ITCC from diversity point of view.
2. Strains of any novel species are accepted.
3. If ITCC already has several strains of a particular species, additional strains of that species may not be accepted for general deposit.
4. We accept only cultures belonging to BSL-1 and BSL-2 level.
Safe Deposits
These cultures are handled with confidentiality. Only the depositor has access to these cultures. There is an annual fee for such a deposit. The ITCC offers a confidential Safe Deposit service for those valuable cultures for which patent protection has not been sought. The cultures will be stored as “Safe-Deposit” in the restricted collection of the ITCC. For each culture deposited, depositor will receive after the viability test a "Declaration of Safe Deposit". The ITCC will take all care to keep them viable and uncontaminated for a period of at least one year after the payment of the annual maintenance fee. The cultures will not appear in the catalogues and are not available to anyone without the approval of the depositor. The depositor has the right to end the deposit at any time and the cultures will be destroyed on his request. This request must be received at the ITCC before the end of the current year. The depositors are required to submit the accession proforma for each strain by giving relevant details and declaration.

Terms and conditions:
1. All orders should be addressed to Head, Division of Plant Pathology, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi-110012, India.
2. Request for supply or identification of cultures should be written by faculty members/staff members of the organization. Request letters from students and research scholars must be endorsed by Head of the Departments/Division/Institution.
3. Fee once paid is non-refundable.
4. All payments should be made in advance by demand draft (DD) drawn in favour of ‘ICAR UNIT, IARI’ payable New Delhi. Online payment can also be done using the following bank details. Transaction no. or UTR no. should be provided after the payment for the record.

6. Fee may be revised from time to time as per guidelines of ICAR and Govt. of India.
7. Microbial cultures are to be supplied only on official address and not on private address.
8. All the cultures should be handled carefully, taking proper and established safety precautions. ICAR-IARI will not be responsible for misuse or improper handling of the culture(s) received from ICAR-IARI. The trait(s) (production of metabolites, degradation of specific compound etc.) associated with microbial culture(s) that is/are claimed by depositor in passport data, the ICAR-IARI does not take responsibility for the loss/degradation/diminished activity in any of the traits mentioned by the depositor. The ITCC supplies cultures bearing its own accession number.
9. Purity, authenticity and viability of cultures are carefully examined by ITCC, ICAR-IARI, New Delhi. However, if there is any complaint about culture(s), please inform the Head, Division of Plant Pathology, ICAR-IARI within three months of the receipt of the cultures. The ICAR-IARI will not entertain complaints received beyond this period.
10. The Microbiological materials provided by ICAR-IARI are not intended for use on humans. The microbiological materials designated as biosafety level 2 or 3 constitute known pathogens and the Recipient agrees that other Microbiological Materials not so designated may be pathogenic under certain conditions.
11. Recipient assumes all risk and responsibility in connection with the receipt, handling, storage, disposal, transfer and use of the microbiological materials, taking all appropriate safety and handling precautions to minimize health or environmental risk.
12. Recipient agrees that any activity undertaken with the Microbiological Materials will be conducted in compliance with all applicable guidelines, laws and regulations and that Investigator will obtain all permits, licenses or other approvals required by any governmental authority in connection with Recipient receipt, handling, storage, disposal, transfer and use of the Microbiological Materials.
13. Recipient shall not distribute, sell, lend or otherwise transfer material to a person or entity (not party to this MTA) for any reason, without prior written permission of ICAR-IARI.
14. Any commercial use of the microbial genetic material is strictly prohibited without prior written consent of DARE/ICAR/ICAR-IARI. Recipient acknowledges and agrees that use of certain genetic material may require a license from a person or entity not party to this MTA (Third Party Term).
15. Use of microbial genetic material may be subject to the intellectual property rights of a person or entity not party to this MTA.
16. This agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of India including of Biological Diversity Act of 2002 and 2004, without regard to the conflicts of the law principles thereof. Recipient is solely responsible for compliance with all the foreign and domestic, federal, state and local statutes, ordinances and regulations applicable to use of the microbial genetic material.
17. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, any shipment of microbial genetic materials from India to other countries must comply with all applicable foreign and Indian Laws, including the Indian export control laws and related regulations.
18. Under no circumstance, DARE/ICAR/ICAR-IARI will be liable for any indirect, special, incidental or consequential damages of any kind in connection with or arising out of MTA.
19. IPR issues related to the exchange of microbial genetic material will be governed by ICAR IPR regulations.
Termination
This Agreement starts on the Commencement Date and terminates on the Completion Date unless it is terminated earlier in accordance with its terms. Provider may terminate this Agreement by the provision of 30 days’ notice to the Recipient if the Recipient:

a) Commits a breach of any term of this Agreement and if the breach is capable of remedy and the breaching party fails to remedy the breach within 14 days after being required to do so in writing by the non-breaching party i.e. the Recipient.
b) Upon termination of the agreement, the Recipient shall have no rights to use the material or data provided by the Provider for research and shall return all data and shall return all data provided by Provider in original copy within 15 days of termination of agreement.
Publications
a) Recipient is encouraged to publish, present or otherwise disclose the results of research arising from the Recipient’s use of biological material. This disclosure should include origin of the material and data and any applicable patent or copyright notices accompanying the material or data. Recipient must reflect accession number of microorganisms assigned by ITCC in the publication arising out of use of microbial cultures.
b) The Recipient agrees to acknowledge the Provider organization ICAR- IARI, Government of India in all publications arising out of research on the biological material.

GLIMPSES OF HERBARIUM CRYPTOGAMAE INDIAE ORIENTALIS (HCIO)
The foundation of Herbarium Cryptogamae Indiae Orientalis (HCIO), a national fungal herbarium facility was laid down by Sir Edwin John Butler at Pusa, Bihar in 1905. After disastrous earthquake at Pusa, Bihar in 1934, the HCIO was shifted to the Division of Mycology and Plant Pathology, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. Ever since its inception in 1905, the HCIO continued with the identification, classification and conservation of fungal specimens.
Main activities:
Accession of fungal diseased specimens:
Identified specimens can be sent for accession. The HCIO accession number will be allotted to the specimens and the accession report will be sent within one month after receipt of specimens. It is necessary to mention this HCIO numbers in publication.
